What I’m Reading – Tuck Everlasting

*Spoilers*

I recently read Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Yes, I know, another children’s book, but I only got around to it now.

The book is about a young girl named Winnie Foster who tries to run away from home but ends up getting kidnapped by the Tuck family. She was kidnapped because she discovered an amazing secret about the Tucks, one that they were desperate to keep hidden.

The chapters of the book are very short, usually only a few pages. I really enjoyed the writing. The author has a very smooth, descriptive style that is easy to read. The subject matter is compelling. The characters each feel differently about their predicament.

There is a lot of talk about death and the circle of life. It made me wonder if you would still be able to call yourself human if you were suddenly taken out of the circle of life. You would be an outsider, an observer of life but no longer a part of it. Being deprived of basic human experiences would probably be a very isolating, lonely existence. You would also have to face whatever the future brought, which isn’t always a good thing.

The book is short, under 200 pages, and is a very good read. It would raise interesting questions for kids of a certain age.
