How to Make Hot Bread

By R.J. Byrd

You have to wake up craving it.

Palpable desire that almost makes you drool.

You need the warm, sweet taste right away.

You have to slip out of bed to get it.

Don’t bother getting dressed

or taking a shower, just walk straight to the kitchen.

Once there raid the fridge

for eggs and milk, search your cabinets for

cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.

Grab a few slices of bread. The thicker the better.

Get out a pan and prepare to cook.

First, crack two eggs and add them to a bowl.

Next, eyeball a quarter cup of milk and whisk

briskly with a fork.

Ignore the grumbling in your stomach.

This won’t take long.

Add liberal amounts of cinnamon, a few dashes of nutmeg and

finally, drop in a generous teaspoon of vanilla.

Whisk together the ingredients and heat up the pan.

Let a tablespoon of sizzling butter coat the hot surface.

Dip both sides of the bread with the sweet mixture.

Let it sizzle and fry in the pan turning a delicious golden brown.

Keep coating and frying until you’re out of batter.

When the house is filled with the tantalizing

aroma of French toast, get a plate ready to display the hot bread.

Paper or plastic, whatever you have is fine.

While it’s still warm, drizzle with preferred syrup and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Enjoy!
